Fenugreek seeds grow on fenugreek plant, which belongs to Fabaceae family. It is a common ingredient in many dishes, but it is easy to overlook these seeds. This is the reason why not many would recollect it, when they hear ‘fenugreek’, but most might have eaten it.

What are the health benefits of fenugreek seeds?

Apart from its taste, these seeds are used in curries or consumed in other forms mainly due to its health benefits. Listed below are a few of such benefits.

  • Cures sore throats 
    Grinding fenugreek seeds in fine particles, and consuming it after mixing it with hot water helps to cure sore throat. The healing process becomes faster.
  • Diabetes
    Since these seeds help to reduce the amount of hyperglycaemia in any person,it helps to reduce the impact of diabetes in diabetic people. Consuming it every day in small doses is good for health.
  • Pains and Rashes 
    Making a paste of fenugreek seeds and applying it on painful joints, rashes or internal injuries can help reduce the pain. This paste works as a natural pain reliever. Although it doesn’t help to cure the pain any faster, it is an excellent pain reliever, which can be used when proper medication is unavailable.
  • Lactation in Women
    Consuming some amount of fenugreek seeds every days helps a mother to produce more quantity of milk to feed her baby. The color of the milk might change a bit. However, this is healthy milk and it is not a side effect of consuming more fenugreek seeds.

    When taken with lemon and honey, fenugreek can help the body get essential nourishment during fever. Hence, if consumed many times a day during fever, helps to get rid of fever quickly.

Although there are no side effects of consuming fenugreek seeds regularly, consuming it in very large quantity can cause diarrhea or gas. Also, before applying it on skin or on painful joints, it is essential to check if the patient is allergic to any such material.
